Open brief GPIO stafleden

  1. de steeds sterkere tweedeling tussen onderwijs en onderzoek (versterkt door de terugloop van financiering vanuit de eerste geldstroom en het “winner takes all” systeem van NWO en ERC);
  2. het democratisch tekort binnen de universiteit (te weten een bestuurssysteem waarin de stem van de werkvloer te weinig doorklinkt en het subsidiariteitsprincipe te weinig wordt toegepast);
  3. de woekering van tijdelijke, flexibele contracten die exploitatieve arbeidsomstandigheden in de hand werken;
  4. het financiële allocatiemodel (dat de nadruk legt op de productie van studiepunten en diploma’s en niet op inhoudelijke doelstellingen);
  5. het niet afleggen van verantwoording over financiën en het gebrek aan financiële transparantie van management richting stafleden en studenten;
  6. de wanverhouding tussen de kosten van huisvesting (waaronder de kosten van de REC gebouwen) enerzijds en bezuinigingen op onderzoek en onderwijs anderzijds;

Wij beraden ons op verdere acties, zowel vanuit de Afdeling alsook in breder facultair en universitair verband, maar willen middels deze brief onze zorgen kenbaar maken.

To the Dean of FMG and the Executive Board (CvB) of the University of Amsterdam.

Open letter GPIO staff members

As staff members of the Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development Studies (GPIO) of the University of Amsterdam, we want to express our solidarity with the protests currently organized by Humanities Rally, De Nieuwe Universiteit, and ReThink UvA.

While we share many of the concerns that these organizations have articulated, as members of the Department we see the following, interrelated areas as our priority areas:

  1. the growing division between teaching and research (exacerbated by the decrease in eerste geldstroom funds and the “winner takes all” system of NWO and ERC grants);
  1. the democratic deficit within the university (specifically, the lack of a governance system that is representative from the bottom up and the need to apply the principle of subsidiarity in decision-making);
  1. the proliferation of temporary, flexible contracts, which is conducive to exploitative labor conditions;
  1. the current funding allocation model (e.g. skewed towards output of study points and diplomas over actual input and substantive priorities);
  1. the lack of financial transparency and accountability of management towards staff and students;
  1. the relationship between housing costs and budget cuts in research and teaching (including those related to the REC buildings)

We are considering further actions, both within the Department GPIO and in the broader context of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) and the University, but wish to express our concerns via this letter.
